History of registered Gyr breed in Brazilian Northeast: population structure and genetic improvement of growth traits Ciência Rural
Malhado,Carlos Henrique Mendes; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Malhado,Ana Claudia Mendes; Martins,Jorge André Matias; Martins Filho,Raimundo; Bozzi,Riccardo.
This paper provides an evaluation of the population structure, phenotype and genetic trends of registered Gyr herd cattle in northeast Brazil. The study provides important baseline information for the management, conservation and potential population expansion of this economically and culturally important cattle breed. Pedigree data were analyzed for individuals born between 1964 and 2006. Body weight values were adjusted to 205 and 365 days of age for animals born between 1978 and 2006. Phenotypic change of zebu Gyr in northeast Brazil is solely due to environmental improvement. However, there is potential for artificial selection for weight gain in young cattle. Effective population size decreased during the 1990s and the average inbreeding coefficient...

Population structure and inbreeding of Holstein cattle in southern Brazil R. Bras. Zootec.
Sieklicki,Michelli de Fátima; Mulim,Henrique Alberto; Pinto,Luís Fernando Batista; Valloto,Altair Antônio; Pedrosa,Victor Breno.
ABSTRACT The present investigation aimed to evaluate the population structure and inbreeding of Holstein herds in southern Brazil. To carry out the analysis, the Associação Paranaense de Criadores de Bovinos da Raça Holandesa (APCBRH) in Brazil provided the data, which consisted of a pedigree file of 206,796 animals born between 1970 and 2014. Results regarding the following parameters were determined: pedigree integrity, effective number of founders, effective number of ancestors, generation interval, inbreeding coefficient, realized effective population size, and average relatedness coefficient. POPREP and ENDOG v.4.5 software packages were employed to estimate these parameters. Based on the data set, the mean generation interval was found to be 6.3...

Population structure of Brazilian Gyr dairy cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Reis Filho,João Cruz; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Verneque,Rui da Silva; Torres,Robledo de Almeida; Teodoro,Roberto Luiz; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the genetic structure of Gyr cattle selected for milk production. Files of pedigree and production were composed of 27,610 animals. The ENDOG program was used for the calculation of individual inbreeding coefficient (F) and coefficient of average relatedness (AR), effective number of animals(Ne), effective number of founders (f e) and ancestors (f a), and generation interval (GI). Individual inbreeding coefficients and average relatedness in the population were 2.82% and 2.10%, respectively. It was observed a reduction in the effective number of animals, especially after publication of the results of the first progeny test. The estimated effective number of founders was 146 and 75 for the ancestrals. Out...

Tabapuã breed in Northeastern Brazil: genetic progress and population structure R. Bras. Zootec.
Caires,Dirlane Novais; Malhado,Carlos Henrique Mendes; Souza,Laaina de Andrade; Teixeira Neto,Milton Rezende; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Martins Filho,Raimundo.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the history of the Tabapuã breed in Northeastern Brazil by determining its population structure and genetic progress. Pedigree information from animals born in the period between 1965 and 2006 and weight-adjusted data at 205 (W205), 365 (W365) and 550 (W550) days of age for bovines born between 1975 and 2006 were used. The (co)variance components and genetic value were estimated using the application MTDFREML. Also, the software ENDOG was used for pedigree analysis and parameter estimation based on the probabilities of gene origin, inbreeding and average generation interval. The heritability coefficients for direct genetic effects were 0.21±0.03, 0.26±0.04 and 0.36±0.05 for W205, W365 and W550, respectively....
